Day 3 - My Parents

Today, as part of the 30 day challenge, I am supposed to share about my parents. This is actually quite tough. All day, I have been pondering what to write. I decided to just sit down and type...I have a feeling this will end up being quite scattered, choppy and perhaps poorly written...so I apologize in advance for that.

Growing up, I don't feel like my parents and I had the best relationship. I never really bonded with my mom, and that is actually the thing I regret the most, never really getting to know and enjoy her.

You see, she has had Multiple Sclerosis for over twenty years. She is not the same person anymore, because of it. I feel like I missed my window of opportunity to get to know her, and I HATE that so much.

Even though I am thirty, I still have those days when I wish I could just call up my mom - ask her advice, cry to her and laugh with her.

Sadly, most of the time when I do call her, she doesn't know who I am. She forgets my name, she forgets I have kids, sometimes she even says to me...." But I don't have a daughter."

Every now and then, there are some good days, when she does know who I am...and we talk for awhile and have some great laughs.

My mom was born and raised in Brooklyn. She is a tough Italian New Yorker. She talks a lot, and loudly. She is very expressive and full of spunk. And she used to make the BEST homemade spaghetti sauce.

In my early childhood, my mom worked nights at a hospital so that she could stay home with me during the day. She really cherished that time with me too. We did a lot together. :D Reading was very important to her, so we read a lot and took weekly trips to the library. She was also very much into board and card games. I used to spend hours playing 500 Rummy, Sorry and Scrabble with her. We would sit, play games, drink tea and just have a fantastic time.

My mom loved her Soap Operas. I would watch them with her every day. She watched One Life To Live, All My Children and General Hospital religiously. I was even named after a character on All My Children, Erica Kane.

I know my mom's body and thought processes have been ravaged by Multiple Sclerosis, but I truly hope that deep down she knows how much I love her and appreciate all that she did for me.

My dad and I also had quite a rocky relationship for many years, mainly during my tween/teen years. I am sure I wasn't the most pleasant daughter most of the time. I was pretty ungrateful. I regret that.

Thankfully, over the past 7 years or so, my dad and I have grown tremendously in our relationship.

My dad was born in Maine. At a young age, he and his siblings were actually abandoned by their parents, found about a week later and taken into state custody. My dad grew up in various foster homes and most of them were horrendously abusive. He had a very difficult childhood.

Because of his upbringing, my dad struggled with properly showing love and affection. I had a hard time with that growing up. I longed for more hugs, kisses and tender moments with my daddy. I was a total daddy's girl.

Now that I am grown, knowing all that he went through as a child, understanding why he had a difficult time showing love, and realizing that he stopped the cycle of abuse, all I have is incredible respect and admiration for my dad. He came out triumphant.

My favorite memories growing up with my dad, revolve around baseball. I used to spend hours sorting through baseball cards with him, finding all of the Red Sox players. I knew quite a bit about players like Mike Greenwell, Wade Boggs and Roger Clemens. We even went to see the Red Sox together at Fenway.

I also remember playing baseball often with my dad, on the side of the house.  I loved it.

I'd like to think that I am a mix of my parents' best qualities. I am petite, strong, independent and spunky, just like my mom. I am hard working, goal-oriented and extremely generous, like my dad.

My parents are pretty super. :D Mom and dad, if you are reading this, I LOVE YOU!

Day 2 - Walking Down Bristol Street

Today is the Second Day in the fun 30 Day Challenge I have jumped into.

Today we are to talk about our first love. This is tough for me and I decided that for today's topic it would be best to use someone else's words.

It is not that I want to downplay my first love. It isn't that I don't feel he deserves quite a story told on here. It's just that at this time...things are raw, difficult and private.

So I searched the internet for song lyrics and poetry, and I think that this poem by W.H. Auden, perfectly describes a bit about my first love.

Just a heads up, this poem makes my heart sad.

As I Walked Out One Evening
by W. H. Auden

As I walked out one evening,
Walking down Bristol Street,
The crowds upon the pavement
Were fields of harvest wheat.

And down by the brimming river
I heard a lover sing
Under an arch of the railway:
'Love has no ending.

'I'll love you, dear, I'll love you
Till China and Africa meet,
And the river jumps over the mountain
And the salmon sing in the street,

'I'll love you till the ocean
Is folded and hung up to dry
And the seven stars go squawking
Like geese about the sky.

'The years shall run like rabbits,
For in my arms I hold
The Flower of the Ages,
And the first love of the world.'

But all the clocks in the city
Began to whirr and chime:
'O let not Time deceive you,
You cannot conquer Time.

'In the burrows of the Nightmare
Where Justice naked is,
Time watches from the shadow
And coughs when you would kiss.

'In headaches and in worry
Vaguely life leaks away,
And Time will have his fancy
Tomorrow or today.

'Into many a green valley
Drifts the appalling snow;
Time breaks the threaded dances
And the diver's brilliant bow.

'O plunge your hands in water,
Plunge them in up to the wrist;
Stare, stare in the basin
And wonder what you've missed.

'The glacier knocks in the cupboard,
The desert sighs in the bed,
And the crack in the tea-cup opens
A lane to the land of the dead.

'Where the beggars raffle the banknotes
And the Giant is enchanting to Jack,
And the Lily-white Boy is a Roarer,
And Jill goes down on her back.

'O look, look in the mirror,
O look in your distress:
Life remains a blessing
Although you cannot bless.

'O stand, stand at the window
As the tears scald and start;
You shall love your crooked neighbour
With your crooked heart.'

It was late, late in the evening,
The lovers they were gone;
The clocks had ceased their chiming,
And the deep river ran on.

So Now, I Can Write.....

When I first began blogging, I wrote everyday, heck I wrote several times per day. My family and friends who lived far away, loved it. They had a way to constantly keep up-to-date with my life and my kids.

Then, I got a job working for 2 very busy blogging ladies....and also got hooked on Facebook and before I knew it, my blogging had pretty much stopped.

I miss it. I am fairly certain that everyday, I think about blogging, but then I think about all of the stuff that has been going on lately that I haven't shared on here.....like work events, conferences, family stories...and I just get so overwhelmed....I want to catch everyone up, but that would just take too long.

So then I take the procrastinator approach and decide to write another day.

Well my poor mom and dad. They aren't on Facebook and they do long to have new posts on my blog...as do I.

So tonight, I came across a solution...a fun post on my good friend's blog that I decided would be a PERFECT way for me to start yapping away to all of you again daily...on this lovely blog.

So my friend stole the idea from my other friend, Sara, who stole the idea from Nerd Girl who stole it from another gal who had stolen it from someone else...so yeah...we are just a bunch of thieves, but cute thieves, right?

Basically this little exercise will have me blogging everyday annnnnd even gives me a daily topic.....so there is no stressing about all of the stuff that I need to catch you all up on, because it doesn't matter. HA!

My first entry, which is coming up here just a little lower, so that I can make this post as long as humanly possible, follows the list of topics, which are…

DAY 1 - HOLLA! Introducing Myself

So first of all, if you read this blog at all, you most likely know me and love me already, I hope.

So who am I?

I am a dreamer, an optimist who likes to look for the good in people and is sometimes too trusting.

I am a mom, who usually feels like she is never a good enough mommy.

I am someone who is pretty self-aware and always quick to notice my faults and work hard at improving myself.

I am shy around people I don't know well...and sometimes waaaaay too open with those I do know. My friends probably sometimes hear and see more than they would ever want to.

I am happy and upbeat. I love to smile and laugh.

While I am laid-back and sometimes way too much of a homebody, I do love to be social. I need my friends....they are what keeps me going. I love them!

I am a hard worker, but I love to play just as hard. :D

I am empathetic and truly enjoy making others around me happy.

I am a giving soul who has a heart for children in Northern Uganda. I would love to go out there on a mission trip someday.

I am a struggling Christian who feels like a failure in that department most of the time as well. But, I do love Jesus with all of my being.

I am just little ol' me....and you know what? I love who I am! :D

Something To Hope For

"We fall down. We get up. We try to hold our head up when life pulls us apart. And we fight and we bleed, but all we ever need is something to hope for, something to hope for."

Yellow is Hope

Thanks to my friend, Tiffany, I happened upon a fun little site, Plinky. It is filled with creative writing prompts to help inspire. This evening I decided to give it a try. I searched through various prompts until I found the perfect one:

"What color is your mood right now?"

The answer was surprisingly easy.

My mood is yellow and yellow = HOPE.

Yellow is the canary who sings its song, even when caged or in a storm.

Yellow is the sun rising each morning to remind us of the brand new day ahead. A chance to try again, start refreshed, achieve new goals.

Yellow is the color of the ribbon that is placed on trees in anticipation of a soldier's safe return home.

Yellow is a wish on a shooting star.

Yellow is the beam of the lighthouse directing the ships to safety.

Yellow is the butterfly's delicate wings emerging from a cocoon.

Yellow is hope.

I decided that I will spend the next seven days or so on my blog focusing on the word, hope. I will share songs, quotes, Bible verses and art, because "once you choose hope, anything's possible."  ~ Christopher Reeve

Announcing the Graduating Class of 2022

Today was Audrey's Kindergarten graduation. She was sooo proud, which made her so cute to watch during the ceremony.

As they presented her class, the principal made note that they are the senior graduating class of 2022. Gosh that seems so far away, but I know she will be a senior in high school before I know it. Time FLIES!

Here is my precious baby girl.

My baby girl, mommy is just as proud as you are. Congratulations my little graduate.
